WHAT IS DANCE IN THE ROUND?
Dance In The Round is a program created by choreographer/dancer Parijat Desai to share transformative collective dance experiences based on Garba and Raas—circle dances from Gujarat, India. She offers public workshops for all ages and levels, as well as age-specific classes.*
This public workshop of Dance In The Round is supported by Gibney’s Moving Toward Justice Cohort, which supports high-potential projects that use art as a tool for activism and social impact.
WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE?
Parijat will lead a gentle and invigorating warmup, and guide participants into basic steps of Garba. Before you know it, you'll be traveling around the circle.
We will be joined by dancers Trinity Dawn Bobo and Annie Wang, and accompanied by percussionist Nezih Antakli on Turkish dawul and by fun Garba/Raas tracks. We conclude with Raas played with dandiya (sticks).
Know how to Garba? This is for you, too. Come show off your moves and help us raise the energy! When we move in concentric circles, there’s space for all to flow.
GIBNEY | MOVING TOWARD JUSTICE
As part of our session, Parijat will share about her Moving Toward Justice project to create a model for working with advocacy and justice organizations. With MTJ support, Parijat is collaborating with Queens-based community organization Chhaya CDC to use dance to support to their housing and immigrant-rights work.

Gibney’s Moving Toward Justice Cohort is made possible by generous support from The Bay and Paul Foundations. Parijat is part of Gibney’s inaugural Moving Toward Justice Cohort. The six selected artists have met monthly since November 2018 to evolve their practice, develop their projects, and create plans for sustainability.
