Choreographer Parijat Desai offers a beginning workshop in the Indian classical dance style of bharata natyam. Using a contemporary approach to learning Indian classical dance, we begin with warming and loosening the joints, followed by yoga-based stretches, basic exercises of bharata natyam and traveling steps. Classes work toward learning an original dance combination. We'll focus on principles of this form, including its sculpturesque body lines and rhythmic footwork, and will dance to an eclectic mix of Indian music.

Attire: Close-fitting shirt and comfortable exercise pants.

Parijat Desai brings 20+ years experience in movement, including extensive training in bharata natyam and modern dance, and runs the NYC-based Parijat Desai Dance Company.
