Parijat Desai Dance Company performs a blend of Indian classical and Western contemporary dance. Artistic Director Parijat Desai integrates the sculptural lines, intricate rhythms, and theatricality of Indian dance with the dynamic movement and conceptual experimentation of contemporary dance. Blending traditions is her way of reflecting the cultural overlaps she experiences as a South Asian American, and challenging the fear-based idea of “us versus them.” Using the visceral power of dance, as well as emotion, rhythm, and sometimes humor, PDDC strives to invite more people into the dialogue, pushing beyond the poles of East/West, American/alien, tradition /modernity.
